Final WIP





Finished making all 8 scissor lift and attached one set to a box to test the motor. Had to design a tracks so it can smoothly go up and down.

Saturday 6/29- Sebastian and I designed the scissor lift. It works really well but we still need to figure out how to motorize it. Annie and David are continuing to work on the lights and tracking.

Test Box


Sebastian and I started to design the box. We are making a test box in order to see the size and scale we want to work with. We cut to square shapes out for the cubes. We will test only two and then create a new box with 4 once we have it working.

David and Annie started by making a RGB LED to change colors depending on distance of the users hand.

Final Project Concept


We settled on a final concept for our final project. It will be a box containing a grid of four squares. Each square will have a distance sensor, so that when a user places his hand over it and lifts, We’re considering making the surface of the blocks from stretched fabric so that it can collapse within the base. We want to work with the illusion of the rising blocks being taller than the height of the base. We haven’t settled on how the lift will work, but we’re thinking scissor lifts. Tonight we’re planning on getting the lights working, messing with the distance sensor, and constructing a prototype box. 

For our final project our team (Sebastian, David, Annie, Nick) decided to create an interactive object. The concept for the object is to have a box with 4 rectangles inside of it. Once the user hoovers their hand over a cube it is activated and begins to grow out of the box depending on the height of the hand. This box is meant to create wonder and curiosity in children. How was the rectangle able to come out of the box if the box is shorter than the final height of a rectangle?

It was interesting watching everyone used it. Although the program didn't go as smooth as we hoped, seeing everyone get involved was a great experience. It would be interesting to clean the program up and take it to a crowded plaza where people can come up and draw/write on walls they should never even consider vandalizing. Having it in the plaza would hopefully attract an audience to watch and participate with the interactive system.

MAX project update

Still having many problems with MAX. So far we are able to track the color smoothly and draw on a separate full screen window. The problem is is it does not draw smoothly at all. So we are still trying to debug that before presentation. We also added an erasing effect to the paint. After so much is drawn it will start to erase as you continue to paint.

During Class time we did rehearsals to test the set up. We decided on a camera stationed in front of user and   projection screen. The User holds the tracked spray can to paint. It seems like a good set up but at the time our paint was not working correctly so we were unable to test it fully.

MAX project WIP update

We are running into many problems. MAX crashes almost every time we open it. Once we do get it working it becomes very laggy. It is very frustrating. For now our goal is to be able to paint smoothly on a projector screen. So far we can track the color and draw but it is very sketchy and uncontrollable.

We found a patch online that is similar to what we need. We had to make a few changes to it plus we added the webcam feed which took us awhile to figure out. The patch is really confusing and there seems to be extra objects we do not need.

MAX project

I created a color tracking system which was able to track and blue dot on my palm.

I linked the color tracking of the blue dot to this system below, which uses a wake filter. When ever it sees the sees the blue dot it shows what the camera sees.
 Once I close my hand, which hides the blue dot, the image will become very high key and almost block out the view with white. This gives a cool strobe light effect. I can make it flash on in off by how fast I open and close my hands.

This is the results of me testing out Max. I decided to try out running two videos at the same time with different filters.

"The Aesthetics of Emergence" Review

Here are the few things I was able to get out of the article.

The article talks about an A-life sculpture. The goal of the sculpture is to give the viewer/user a interactive process which involves the behavior of the artwork and of the viewer.

There are different types of interaction. Participatory, Joint, and Autonomous. participatory requires the participation and coordination from the users. Joint requires a collaboration of effort between two participants. Autonomous activity only uses a single participant.

Creating a interactive system requires going beyond the users completing the goal. This includes the design and interface of the system. The experience might not be how the user interacts or is challenged but by how the user is effected by the aesthetics.

In creating my own interactive system I would want the goal more focused on the aesthetics. I want the viewer to be affected by the actions created with visuals. The system would be an Autonomous activity.

Stop Motion Update

The stop motion is going very well. I am excited to see the all the frames compiled together. There are a few bumps but other that that it looks great. The main problems we are finding are accidentally nudging the camera and figuring out cool morphing animations to use between the keys.

We decided to switch one creature to be replaced by an octopus. This gave us a good connection with the slug in the beginning. Both are slimy and squirm around.


We decided on the name "Catalyst: Trial 8" for the animation

Count Down


A Count Down animation created by Sebastian, Michael, and I. We used the program Dragonframes. It is a great program, although we learned that we need to completely wait for shutter to close before we continue to move to next frame.

This Stop Motion animation is made entirely from foam. It is completely white and black and relies on shadows. The link above is a short 30 sec video of how they made the set.

The stop motion is for the music video for the Shin's song The Rifle's Spiral. It is a dark animation that reminds me of Tim Burton's style. It seems to be made with wooden puppets.
